Know your skin

Organic Riot- Know your skin. What is Sebum and how skin works. All answers here!

Our skin is a mirror of the life we lead.

On average, a person using synthetic skincare will apply 200+ chemicals every day through their daily skincare routines. The decisions we make in the supermarket can potentially affect us for the rest of their lives. That is why now is a good time to understand skincare holistically and consume it consciously.

Did you know...

Skin is the body's largest organ and also one of the most responsive ones. What goes on our skin is absorbed into our bodies.

Sebum is your skin’s natural defence barrier. Jojoba oil has the closest in construction to the human sebum, and therefore is a natural replacement for it. When the body is unable to produce enough sebum to protect against harsh external elements, jojoba oil can be the perfect skincare solution.

Your skin is thinnest on the eyelids (0.05mm) and thickest on the soles of the feet (5mm). This is why moisturising creams for the body will always be thicker than ones for the face. A lighter consistency will allow the product to better absorb into skin that’s thin and vice versa.

Skin provides the body with:

  • Protection
  • Heat regulation
  • Excretion
  • Warming
  • Sensitivity
  • Nutrition
  • Moisture control

The skin takes approximately 28 days to renew itself. As humans age, this process can take up to 45 days. Synthetic ingredients may show quicker results, but can be harmful in the long run. Natural products, on the other hand, align with the skin cycle and work gently. This is why they show more holistic and long lasting changes, making them the safer and more enduring option. For eg: when a car breaks down would you rather get a horse pull it or actually fix the engine? We focus on fixing the engine!

What is an acid mantle?

The skin is composed of three primary layers: The epidermis (the outer layer), the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue or fat layer. Sweat and sebum combine on the skin's surface to create an acidic film known as the acid mantle. This is the body’s first line of defence against bacteria and is our skin's protector.

The acid mantle develops at puberty – children do not have an acid mantle and this why they're more susceptible to diseases, viruses and fungal infections.

Organic Riot ensures a perfect pH of 5.5 to discourage the growth of bacteria and fungi. This pH balance in your skin helps maintain a clear and healthy complexion.

Organic Riot focuses on formulating highly effective products using only certified natural ingredients, fragrances and preservatives. We take a holistic approach to understand the role your skin plays in your life, and therefore treat it appropriately.
